How to Choose the Right Extracurricular Activities
The flyer comes home: Soccer! Robotics! Ballet! Vedic Math! Suddenly, your 7-year-old is booked from 4 PM to 8 PM every day. Stop.
Extracurriculars are vital for holistic development, but burnout is real—for kids and tax-driving parents.
The Rule of Payoff
Every activity should offer something school doesn't.- Physical: If school has no sports, pick a sport.
- Creative: If school is academic-heavy, pick art or music.
- Social: If your child is shy, pick a team activity like drama or soccer.
Quality > Quantity
One activity pursued passionately is better than five pursued lukewarmly.- Deep Work: Mastery teaches resilience. Dabbling teaches... well, dabbling.
Watch the Signs of Burnout
- Irritability or exhaustion.
- Falling grades.
- "I don't want to go" (consistently, not just occasionally).
